Home Support Services

Te Whatu Ora Taranaki provides both Home Support and Meals on Wheels services. Clients can be referred to the Home Support Unit by inpatient ward staff, district nurse, social worker, nurse manager, occupational therapist or a GP.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels is available for clients who are not able to prepare a nutritious hot meal and have nobody available to give the necessary assistance.

Meals on Wheels can be provided for a number of reasons:

  • Long term because of failing health
  • Short term, during illness or after a stay in hospital.

A main meal and dessert is provided in an aluminium disposable container. Meals are delivered at midday, Monday to Friday, by volunteer drivers. Meals are not available on statutory holidays and are not available in rural areas. There is a cost for Meals on Wheels.

Home Support

Home Help and Personal Cares are available for clients leaving hospital who have nobody available to give the necessary help. The Home Support is generally short-term, six to eight weeks. If a client requires long-term assistance and meets the financial criteria, a referral to Te Whatu Ora Taranaki Community Support Services for a needs assessment can be arranged. In some community cases, we can assist until alternative help can be arranged for the client.
