Stratford to host Taranaki Maternity Services roadshow

4 October 2017

A range of free and low cost support services for whānau planning a pregnancy, expecting a child, or with young children will be on show at the Taranaki DHB’s Taranaki Maternity Services Roadshow in Stratford next week.

Christine Strydom, Taranaki DHB Maternity Services consumer representative said, “The roadshow is a great opportunity bring people together and to engage with a variety of support services that are essential for the health and wellbeing of the whole whānau during pregnancy and thereafter.”

One of those services is that of a midwife or lead maternity carer (LMC).

“It’s important for pregnant women to engage with a midwife or LMC once they find out they are pregnant. Within the first ten weeks is best, to ensure they receive the required tests and support right the way through their pregnancy and after the birth of their child,” said Mrs Strydom.

“We think people will be surprised at just how much free support is available throughout Taranaki. This  includes midwives, antenatal groups, breastfeeding and safe sleep support, immunisation, mental health and nutrition advice to name just a few,” added Mrs Strydom.

The free event will run from 10:00am - 1:00pm, Thursday 19 October at Stratford War Memorial Hall, where families will be able to drop in and meet with midwives and support services such as La Leche League, Breastfeeding Peer Support, Women’s Refuge, SANDS, Parents Centre, Baby Wearing, Well Child Providers, primary healthcare and many more.

A light morning tea will also be provided.

“We understand the importance of whānau support during pregnancy and in raising a family so we encourage everyone in the community to come along and find out more about these valuable support services,” added Mrs Strydom.
