Taranaki DHB supporting mothers through Breastfeeding Welcome Here sites

12 December 2014

During the busy Christmas period, Taranaki DHB would like to remind breastfeeding mothers of the accredited Breastfeeding Welcome Here sites which can be used when they are out and about.

Taranaki DHB Health Promoter Sara Knowles said, “There are now 64 accredited Breastfeeding Welcome Here sites throughout Taranaki. These include libraries, cafes and shops, as well as spaces at Base Hospital and Plunket in New Plymouth, Stratford and Hawera. The spaces are identified by a sticker on or near the front door.”

“To become accredited the site must meet a number of criteria. These include staff being supportive and welcoming to breastfeeding mothers, the provision of appropriate seating, the opportunity for a woman to breastfeed discreetly if she desires, and a nappy change area and hand washing facility nearby.”

Breastfeeding Welcome Here was established by the Taranaki DHB Public Health Unit in 2002. Since June 2014, seven new sites in New Plymouth and Inglewood have been accredited.

“As most of us know, breastfeeding is beneficial for both mothers and babies and Taranaki DHB is committed to supporting breastfeeding mothers. The Breastfeeding Welcome Here sites are just one way we do this,” added Ms Knowles.
