Hairdresser welcomes breast feeding

3 June 2014

Ruby Blu hairdresser in New Plymouth is the first hairdressing business to encourage breastfeeding welcome here on its premises and mothers love it.

“Breastfeeding Welcome Here is a health promotion project that has been in existence for the past 10 years,” said Taranaki DHB health Promoter Hinenui Bryant.

“The aim of the project is to normalise breastfeeding in public places, to enable women to breastfeed anywhere and anytime.”

“Breastfeeding Welcome Here has done well to normalise breastfeeding in eateries and public spaces, but there is work to be done. Having a hairdresser on board helps to further reinforce the message that breastfeeding is normal and acceptable everywhere”

Ruby Blu was approached by public health unit researcher Maree Young to be a part of the programme, as they allowed Maree to breastfeed whilst she was on maternity leave with her now 15 month old son Ben.

Currently there are 62 accredited sites throughout Taranaki and the team is currently working with Tui Ora Ltd in working towards accreditation for workplaces and early childhood centres.
