Manaia Street Challenge Day 2014

19 February 2014

A family fun day will be held in Manaia Saturday the 22nd of February kicking off at 10.30am.

Taranaki DHB Health Promoter Sara Knowles working with other agencies to organise the event said the day is about having fun and getting to know your neighbours better.

“The day will begin with all-ages tabloids, the fun old-fashioned activities like ball (instead of egg) on a spoon, filling buckets of water with a sponge etc. In the afternoon street teams will compete in a rotation of activities including ki-o-rahi, a smokefree challenge, an obstacle course and a quiz. There will also be a baking competition, with points going to the street team. Bakers can choose to auction their product, with the funds raised going towards the building of the Manaia Skate Park.

“Everyone is welcome, all ages from babies through to kaumatua. There will be a team for people who are from Manaia but live outside of the 13 streets in town – the 'near towners'. Others may be asked to join a street team which is lower in numbers of participants.

"There is no cost for anything. There will be free sausages but we encourage families to bring a picnic to keep them sustained during the day.

“The focus of the day is having fun with one another and developing closer relationships so it is easier to care for and support one another,” said Sara.

“We feel really privileged to work with the people of Manaia, and we love the days we spend there. No one living in Manaia should feel lonely!”

This event has been made possible by many partners working together. This includes: South Taranaki District Council (Community Development); Ngaruahine Iwi Maatua Whangai; Ngaruahine Iwi Health Service; Child, Youth & Family; NZ Police; The Anglican Church; Smokefree Aotearoa 2025; Sport Taranaki; Taranaki Safe Families Trust and Taranaki DHB Health Promotion Unit.
