Inglewood Lions – Maize Maze donations to brighten Children’s Ward

2 December 2013

The Inglewood Lions have recently donated over $14,000 from the proceeds of their annual summer “Maize Maze” to the Taranaki Health Foundation for art for Taranaki Base Hospital’s TSB Ward 2B Children and Young People’s ward.

The art has been designed by local artist, Jennie Aitken-Hall of Hall of Design. It has been developed by a process of consultation with ward staff, patients, parents and other ‘user groups’ and features bright yet peaceful child appropriate natural scenes of the sea, local birds and wildlife. It is the first of possibly three stages where the scenes are likely to blend into child focused forest scenes and the back yard scenes.

Service Manager Leigh Cleland said a lot of people including patients and their families have given feedback about the art work. “We have put a lot of time into this art work and we are really excited about the impact to will have for the children and their families while they are staying in the ward,” said Ms Cleland.

Inglewood Lion and Chairman of Maize Maze George Buchanan said: “This project dates back to a commitment made by the Lions in 2010 to the Children’s Ward,”

“We are very proud to be able to give such a significant amount to the children of Taranaki. There were many vendors and partners who helped us execute and promote the Maze and we are very proud of the support from the local Taranaki community,” said Mr Buchanan.

“They not only enjoyed the maze but their donation helped us fund this major donation for such a worthy project.”

Taranaki Health Foundation executive officer Rachel Church said the foundation was grateful for the generous support of the Inglewood Lions.  “Children and young people visiting the ward will be greeted with cheerful art spanning the halls, treatment and patient rooms.

“This is the sort of extra that really makes a difference to how everyone feels about their stay in hospital and their recovery,” she said.
