Taranaki Mama Pepe Hauora Service

12 August 2013

A new service to support mothers and their whanau to improve nutrition and increase physical activity will shortly begin in Taranaki.

Taranaki DHB Portfolio Manager Becky Jenkins said the Taranaki Mama Pepe Hauora Service aims to improve women’s health during pregnancy and the post-natal period through promotion of healthy eating and physical activity. “Good nutrition and physical activity play a major role in preventing the later development of heart disease, diabetes and obesity,” said Mrs Jenkins.

This service will develop new community led maternal and child physical activity and nutrition initiatives and also extend the Breastfeeding Welcome Here (BFWH), Breastfeeding Peer Support and Active Movement Programmes.

The service will be led by Tui Ora Ltd on behalf of the Te Kawau Maro Alliance and will focus on those communities with the highest needs.

Tui Ora Executive Leader Service Delivery, Jane Hawkins-Jones said, “The services will link with and build on existing programmes and activities in Taranaki.  We look forward to working alongside communities and a range of organisations to plan new maternal and child physical activity and nutrition initiatives”.
