Public Open Day gives Taranaki people a sneak preview

6 June 2013

Taranaki DHB invites everyone to come along to see the Taranaki Base Hospital redevelopment (Project Maunga) on Saturday June 8th before staff and patients move in.

The public will get to see a part of the theatre suite including one operating theatre, the recovery unit, endoscopy and day surgery area, (first level) the TSB Children and Young People Ward (level 2) and a surgical ward (level 3).

Hospital redevelopment Project Manager Steve Berendsen said the site is still in construction but the DHB had been given the handover for the above areas.

“Staff are really excited about seeing everything and I am sure the public will realise how extensive Project Maunga has been, and how much better it will be for them and for our staff.”

“We are expecting lots of people and tours will be operating from 11 – 1.30pm. It will be great– and an area that the public doesn’t usually see when they are awake is the theatre area, so that will be of enormous interest.”

Theatre Manager Judyth Marsh said one way to describe the theatre suite is “Bigger, brighter, better!”
One of our theatres is digital which enables the sharing of real time visual information where appropriate for teaching and consultation, and for remote expertise if required.

“We will have Theatre, Endoscopy, Dayward and Sterile Services Department all on the same level which will make it so much easier for patients and staff,” said Mrs Marsh.

“We have six larger theatres as opposed to four and a small one. We have windows in four of the six theatres which was something the surgeons requested,” she said.

“The new recovery unit has an increased capacity and the Dayward area is also much bigger to cater for the increasing number of day case patients we will be experiencing.”

Public Open Day – Saturday 8th June 11am – 2pm. Starts at Taranaki Base Hospital main entrance.
