‘Not Even’ heads to Patea for parents and teenagers

21 May 2012

Not Even is a fun, free evening for young people of about 12 to 15 years living in South Taranaki and their parents to look at ways of talking together about the hard conversations.

The aim of the night is to help young people and their parents develop strategies to communicate effectively about things that are important to them such as alcohol and drug issues, using a positive and supportive environment.

Taranaki DHB Health Promoter Jason Matthews says: “For this reason it is important that both the young people and their parents attend together.”

“The programme is a fun multi choice quiz designed to encourage open discussion. The event showcases some young people from the local community including musicians, motivational speakers and MC,” he said.

Photo voice will be another feature of the night. Photo voice is a project that allows young people to express themselves by taking photos around their community. The photos are presented with a caption so the young person is able to communicate and advocate for change in their community. This project has been done prior to the actual ‘Not Even’ evening and the photos and discussion will be presented on the “Not Even” night.

Spot prizes are being donated by South Taranaki businesses, including five major spot prizes of $100 vouchers for Oxygen clothing (Hawera). Young people who are present with a parent will be in the draw and there will be a major spot prize for the parents attending.

‘Not Even’ is a collaborative project lead by Taranaki DHB Public Health Unit and supported by Patea Youth Trust, Patea Pride Sports Club Inc, Te Runanga o Ngati Ruanui, Patea Area School, Te Korimako radio station and South Taranaki Youth.

The event is to be held at Patea Area School on Wednesday 23rd May from 6.30 to 9.30pm.
The Not Even event is also part of Youth week and celebrates the positive contribution youth make to the community.
