Fulford Radiology installs ground breaking digital mammography machine

“Digital technology that revolutionises breast imaging has been installed at our Fulford Street Rooms,” said Clinical Director of Fulford Radiology Services Limited, Dr Alina Leigh. “This equipment and refurbishment is at the forefront of mammography technology.”

Mammography remains the single best screening tool for the detection of breast cancer. As nearly one in ten women will develop this in New Zealand, improved technology will allow improved detection at an earlier stage.

The Hologic Selenia Dimensions 3D system offers breast tomosynthesis, enabling clarification of shadows from overlapping breast tissue, not previously possible with traditional film images.

"This digital mammography allows our specialist radiologist doctors to report with increased detail which helps to detect much smaller lesions. It also means images can be electronically sent to multiple workstations for consultations,” she said.

Features of the machine include exceptionally sharp images for viewing fine detail, advanced user tools to simplify operation and shorter examination times. The equipment also has improved features to help with guidance for localisation of cancers for surgery.

Dr Leigh advises all women between the ages of 45 and 69 to enrol in Breast Screen Aoteoroa. Additional mammography screening is also provided for at risk women by the Taranaki DHB. Anyone, male or female, of any age with a breast lump should also see their medical practitioner urgently. This could save their life.
