Fletcher Construction Announced as Contractor for Base Hospital Redevelopment

10 June 2011

Taranaki DHB has announced Fletcher Construction as the preferred main contractor for Project Maunga, the redevelopment of Taranaki Base Hospital, said Taranaki DHB Chief Executive Tony Foulkes.

"It's really exciting to be able to announce another major milestone allowing us to progress according to our timeline," said Mr Foulkes. "We expect that site preparation work will begin as early as July with construction officially starting in late August."

"Throughout the project we have encouraged local input where appropriate and we expect that to continue with this decision."

"This is a significant project that will benefit the whole Taranaki community," he said. "No doubt it will support the local economy as well as being good for health services."

"I would really like to acknowledge and thank everyone for all the work that has gone on to reach this point. There has been a tremendous contribution by user groups and staff working together with the design team," said Mr Foulkes.

"Having completed the building design, the hard work will continue over the next two years as we re-design our services to get the maximum benefit for our patients."

He said it will be fantastic to see all the hard work begin to take shape. "I am sure the finished building will give the whole community something to be proud of."

Fletcher Construction executive Richard Coupe said he is delighted to be working with the Taranaki DHB to deliver the new acute services block known as Project Maunga. "Fletcher is offering national expertise in the hospital sector, resources from the wider company and the local knowledge and networks gained over many years working in the region."

Taranaki Manager Bob Thompson and his team are thrilled to be involved. "Not only is this much needed facility finally to be provided for the benefit of the wider community, but that we have been entrusted with such a significant project."

The development includes six new operating theatres (currently 4), day stay services, a new bigger inpatient ward block and overall will provide significantly better quality environment for patients and staff, including a building of very high seismic standard.

The development will be located at the southern side of the existing Stainton Ward Block. The Stainton Building will be demolished once the new build is completed, with a new link connecting the new block to the rest of the site.

We expect the building work to take approximately two years with services planned to move to the new building in late 2013.
