Ward One Patient’s Benefits from Generous Rotary Donation

7 February 2011

New Plymouth Rotary has donated a bladder scanner to ward one at Taranaki Base hospital in memory of a former Rotarian and patient of the ward.

NP Rotary community projects co-ordinator Gail Brophy said early in 2010 we lost a dear and longstanding Rotarian Alex Strode.  He had been in hospital for a short while before passing on.  We had learned that he expressed that we assist the Ward that he had been in with a piece of equipment and we named our project the Alex Strode Memorial Project.

Ward one nurse manager (at the time) Sue Williamson said Mr Strode had told us he would do something and he wanted it to be a staff decision.

“I asked the nurses what they would find most beneficial and they decided on a bladder scanner. I didn’t know it would cost that much but it really is appreciated,” she said.

“The scanner allows us to monitor and manage bladder concerns easily without waiting. Nurses can have a look before it becomes uncomfortable because the scan is so accessible now.”

“It is just fantastic to have this on the ward.”

The rotary fundraising consisted of a Golf Day, a Dinner evening, home-hosting for concerts (Bowl of Brooklands shows), a movie evening and funds from The Rotary Foundation.

With our other fundraising efforts the Rotarians managed to muster a total of $13000.00.

An official presentation to the ward will be in Ward one on Tuesday February 8th at 10.15. Please call me to let me know if you are attending.
