Asthma Children Enjoy the Outdoors

27 January 2011

A camp for children with asthma is being held to encourage managing asthma while having heaps of fun.

Taranaki DHB Clinical Nurse Specialist – Respiratory, Shirani Smith said the camp was the perfect safe environment for children to realise they can still exercise and have fun with asthma.

“Many children don’t realise what they can do and focus on what they cannot. The idea of the camp is for children to enjoy the outdoors and feel good. It’s all about confidence,” she said.

“The camp is for children with asthma so they all have their own challenges.”

Paediatrician Dr Dirken Krahn will be joining in the fun for the entire camp and other GPs Dr Arif and Sangitha will be there on Sunday. Other health professionals such as local social workers will also be in attendance to encourage and help the participants.

“Its all about action,” said Mrs Smith. “The Topec instructors are fantastic and on Saturday night we have a big karaoke party so the kids love that as well.”

The camp is for children with asthma ages between 7-13yrs. It is held at Topec from Friday 28th Jan to Sunday 30th. The camp is sponsored by the Taranaki Asthma / Respiratory Society.
