New Plymouth mum a winner in breastfeeding photo competition

19 February 2010

New Plymouth’s Letitia Stevenson has come out a winner, being voted into second place in the Lower Central North Island category of the Ministry of Health’s breastfeeding photo competition. Kathleen Maki from Palmerston North was placed first.

Taranaki DHB Healthy-Eating:Healthy-Action manager Becky Jenkins, says the competition aimed to celebrate and support breastfeeding and, in particular, breastfeeding in public places. More than 360 entries were received nationwide.

“We’re thrilled that so many mums showed their support for breastfeeding by entering photos. They are sending a strong message to other women that breastfeeding in public places is entirely natural,” said Mrs Jenkins.

Letitia’s photo shows her feeding baby Eve on a day out at the New Plymouth races.

The competition was part of the Ministry of Health’s breastfeeding education initiative, which promotes breastfeeding as the natural start to life.
