Ward Reopens

August 12, 2009

Ward 5 (general medical) at Taranaki Base Hospital has reopened after it was closed following an outbreak of norovirus.

Eighteen patients and 12 staff members were affected by the virus. All are now symptom free.

“Staff members have worked incredibly hard to contain the spread of the illness,” TDHB Outpatient Services Manager Lee McManus says. “We thank our staff, patients and their families for their cooperation and understanding during this time.”

Ward 5 was closed last week (3 August) after patients were stricken with gastroenteritis. As a result of the outbreak, 23 operations were deferred.

While the ward is now open to visitors, infection control measures are still in place.
