Taranaki Base Hospital Ward 1 update

Ward 1 at Taranaki Base Hospital remains closed to admissions today (Monday) and will hopefully re-open tomorrow (Tuesday).

No patients displayed symptoms typical of norovirus over the weekend but one staff member went home on Saturday with suspicious symptoms. For this reason, the lifting of restrictions has been delayed.

The outbreak of gastroenteritis in Ward 1 has been confirmed as norovirus. Infection control restrictions remain in place and visitors are restricted.

Eight patients were affected and possibly three staff members.

Taranaki DHB Hospital Operations Manager Steve Berendsen said staff continue to work hard to keep the outbreak contained.

“This has been very difficult for staff, patients and their families but everyone has been very cooperative and understanding over this time. The efforts of all those involved to contain this illness has been tremendous and is much appreciated,” said Mr Berendsen.
