Taranaki Base Hospital Gastroenteritis update
The outbreak of gastroenteritis in Ward 1 at Taranaki Base Hospital has been confirmed as norovirus. Infection control restrictions remain in place and the earliest the ward could be reopened is Monday.
In total 8 patients were affected and possibly 2 staff members. There have been no new cases for 72 hrs, although one patient continues to have active symptoms.
Taranaki DHB Hospital Operations Manager, Steve Berendsen said the staff had worked very hard to keep the outbreak contained and minimise the disruption.
“This has been very difficult for staff, patients and their families but everyone has been very
cooperative and understanding over this time. The efforts of all those involved to contain this illness has been tremendous and is much appreciated,” said Mr Berendsen.
Penny Hutchinson – Medical Officer of Health – has put an advert in the Daily News for Saturday with lots of info about Gastro and preventing its spread.
