‘NOT EVEN’ – PARENTS AND THEIR TEENS GETTING TOGETHER IN SOUTH TARANAKI

An exciting event is happening in the South Taranaki community for young people and their parents.

The ‘Not Even’ event on May 29th at 6.30pm at the Hawera Community Centre hall, Albion Street. ‘Not Even’ is an event that will coincide and support youth week. The night will provide a free entertaining and enlightening evening for year 9 and 10 students and their parents of Hawera High and Patea Area schools.

Last year, a successful event was held in Opunake and all those who attended raved about it.

The MC for the night will be the vibrant Radio DJ - Hohepa from Te Korimako o Taranaki's 94.8fm - The Drive Show and entertainment will be provided by the Hawera Krumpers & Natural Remedy from Patea. There are also many fabulous spot prizes donated from local businesses and organisations.

Taranaki DHB Health Promoter Nital Brown is excited about the night.
“The evening will create a supportive and fun environment for young people and their parents to talk about things that are important,” said Ms Brown. “The night will include music and will cover hot issues such as attitudes towards alcohol, drugs and peer pressure.

The evening is aimed at encouraging parents and students to talk to each other, especially about the things that matter and is one of the many strategies dedicated to reducing alcohol related harm in South Taranaki.

Parents will also have the opportunity to meet other parents and would be encouraged to form a network and support group to help each other when dealing with issues in relation to their young teens.

The event is a joint initiative between the South Taranaki District Council, Hawera Police, Mahia Mai A Whai-Tara, Youth Transition Services, Raumano Trust, Hawera High and Patea Area School, and the Health Promotion Unit of the Taranaki District Health Board.

All parents or caregivers and year 9 and 10 students of Hawera High and Patea Area School are welcome to participate in the this event. A free bus for Patea students and parents will leave Patea Area School at 5.30pm to return to Patea at 9.30pm
