Taranaki DHB welcomes High Court Judicial Review

3 March 2014

Taranaki DHB Chief Executive Tony Foulkes, said he is delighted to hear of this sensible outcome, particular for the communities of Patea and Waverley.

“The South Taranaki District Council should be congratulated for their decision, and I encourage them and other Councils to extend the benefits of fluoridated water supply to other communities as soon as they can,” said Mr Foulkes.

Taranaki Medical Officer of Health Dr Jonathan Jarman also welcomed the outcome of the High Court judicial review.

“Justice Hansen has made a well researched and considered decision about the ability of Councils to protect the health of their populations.”

Dr Jarman said that Mayor Dunlop and the South Taranaki District Council had been courageous to want to improve the health of people in Patea and Waverley.

“I believe that they are a gutsy Council and am very pleased for them and their communities that their decision making process has been validated in the High Court.

David Antunovic, Taranaki DHB dental clinical director, was also pleased with the decision: "A thorough and considered decision that supports community water fluoridation and will benefit all communitites within New Zealand."

The Taranaki DHB position on the use of community water fluoridation is that it is a safe, effective and affordable way to prevent and reduce tooth decay.
