First step for staff in moving into redevelopment at Taranaki Base Hospital
20 May 2013
Taranaki DHB Project Manager Base Hospital redevelopment Steve Berendsen was delighted to be given the key to the door by Fletcher Construction this morning.
“This is the first day of a staged handover,” said Mr Berendsen. “Today we have been handed the keys for level one which includes theatre, endoscopy, sterile services and day surgery, Level 2 - the Children’s Ward and the Orthopaedic Surgical Ward on level 3.”
“There are lots of our staff who have been looking at this being designed and built and who are very excited about getting their first look at it.”
“Much of the building is still in construction phase so we are planning orientation for the staff very carefully. The group who saw it this morning are suitably impressed with lots of positive comments. It’s looking fantastic,” he said.
This week some staff are beginning to be orientated as trainers so they in turn can start orienting other clinical staff from next week.
“We have hundreds of staff so it has taken a fair bit of organising. Staff will have to become familiar with the new layout, with new equipment and with new ways of working. This building is a big change from the old. We want this to take health care in our hospital and into the foreseeable future,” he said.
The remainder of the new block will be handed over to the DHB later in June, with the first patients due to be transitioned in early July.
There will be an open day for the public to view some of the new building on Saturday June 8th with more information on this to come.
