North Island Secondary Schools Softball Tournament goes smoke free

23 March 2011

Taranaki Softball Association is hosting the North Island Secondary School Softball tournament and is committed to promoting smokefree.

Tournament organiser Kowhai Teddy said: “It’s our commitment to ensure our future stars have the best possible start, it’s like the smoking add on TV say’s “smoking, not our future’”.

“Smokefree will have a huge presence at the tournament with smokefree flying banners on display and smokefree prizes and giveaways to help promote no smoking in sport,” said Mr Teddy.

Taranaki DHB Health promoter Jason Matthews said it was great that Taranaki Softball had come on board to help spread that word that smoking is not our future. “We want to stop our rising stars from ever starting to smoke and this is a great place to reach a lot of young athletes.”

“A total of 19 schools throughout the North Island are will be competing for the title of top school, so that’s a lot of kids we can touch,”  he said.

The tournament is on Tuesday 29th March to Friday 1st April 2011 @ Hickford Park Bell Block, the North Island Secondary Schools Division 2 Softball Tournament.  The only local team from a Taranaki school to make the cut are NPGHS who have competed in four previous tournaments with a best result of runner up in 2007.  NPGHS successfully defeated the Taranaki Senior Women’s team in the 2009/2010 grand final and are set to make an impact during the three day event.
