Pink Feet hit Parkland’s supermarket

July 1, 2009

The Nutrition and Physical Activity team at Taranaki DHB’s Health Promotion Unit are putting down “Pink Feet” on the floor of the Parkland’s supermarket in Bell Block on Monday 6th July from 6am -9am.

This is the third year that pink feet have been on the floor of this supermarket for a school term. The pink feet which say “2 Healthier Choices” make a trail to the healthier choices in the supermarket. The healthier choices are further identified by a pink sticker under the item which says “Healthier Choice”

This initiative has been evaluated by the Health Promotion Unit and last year 26% of supermarket shoppers said the pink feet did influence what they bought. They said they bought more fruit and vegetables, better choices of breads and breakfast cereals and less fizzy drinks and chips.

This year while the Pink Feet are on the floor, the Public Health Dietitians and Nutritionists will also be offering shoppers supermarket tours. These tours will teach shoppers how to interpret the information on the nutrition labels on packets as well as give good nutrition tips for families. The tours will take about ¾ hour and are free.

Supermarket tours will be on:

Wednesday 22nd July at 9.15 am
Tuesday 2nd September at 7.00pm
Thursday 24th September at 7.00pm

The Pink Feet are part of a bigger community action project which has been running in Bell Block since 2005. The aim of the project is to work with the Bell Block community to improve nutrition and increase physical activity for people living and working in Bell Block.

A photo opportunity is available up until 9.30am on Monday July 6th at Parklands Supervalue Supermarket.
