Health Services available for young people in the New Plymouth Area

Health Service Options
The following health services are available for young people. Some are free, others include a cost.

General Practice Services (GP)

Sexual Health Services
General Practices can offer free sexual health services if you are under 25 years of age. There are criteria that are applied to assess whether you are eligible. The practice will inform you if you meet the criteria.

Free Counselling Services
General Practices can offer referrals for free counselling services. There are criteria that are applied to assess whether you are eligible. The practice will inform you if you meet the criteria.

General Health Services
If you need to access General Practice for general health services, the costs for a consultation range between:
6 – 17 years $11.50 - $28.00
17 – 24 years $17.00 - $42.00

After Hours Services
Phoenix Urgent Doctors and MediCross Accident and Medical Clinic operate services after hours as follows:
Monday to Sunday: 8:30 am - 8:00 pm (charges apply).

Public Health Nursing Services and other Sexual Health Clinics in Secondary Schools

Public Health Nurses deliver clinics in Taranaki High Schools and several alternative Education Centres.

Clinics are held at least weekly on campus. Large High Schools have clinics twice a week and the Public Health Nurses are able to be contacted by the school at other times, or students can text the Nurse directly when they need to be seen, this includes during the school holidays.

Public Health Nurse’s are able to offer treatment and/or advice on a range of health issues including general medical, sexual health, emotional and behavioural, alcohol and drug, smoking cessation, nutrition, and continence services. In addition a Doctor provides sexual health clinics in several of the high schools.

Public Health Nurses attend schools as follows:
Spotswood College - Monday, Wednesday, Thursday.
Dr Clinic weekly.
New Plymouth Girls High - Monday, Tuesday Wednesday.
Dr Clinic weekly.
Francis Douglas - Monday, Wednesday, Thursday.
Waitara High School - Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Dr Clinic weekly.
Sacred Heart Girls College - Monday and Tuesday
New Plymouth Boys High - Wednesday
Young Peoples Trust - Thursday
Taranaki Activity Centre - Thursday
Taku Hoe - Wednesday

Emergency Department

In the event of an emergency go to the Emergency Department at Taranaki Base Hospital.

Family Planning – Sexual Health Services

Family Planning provide a range of services including sexual health checkups, contraception, pregnancy testing and counselling and cervical smears.

Monday 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
Tuesday 3:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Wednesday 9:00 am – 8:30 pm
Thursday 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
Friday 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Cost:
New Zealand Resident

Under 22 years - Free
With Community Services Card (22 years or over) - $5.00
Without Community Services Card (22 years or over) - $23.00
IUS fit: Normal consultation fee plus cost of device/materials.
Implant insertion/removal: Normal consultation fee plus cost of device/materials.
