Smokefree

For the health of our communities there is no smoking in Taranaki DHB buildings or grounds.

On 1 February 2013 Taranaki DHB became Smokefree/Auahi Kore with the removal of our designated smoking areas.

This is a huge milestone for the DHB which is contributing toward the achievement of our goal of becoming Smokefree Aotearoa by 2025.

Taranaki DHB is committed to protecting the health and wellbeing of all patients, visitors and employees.

We believe that tobacco and smoking are still too visible in our communities. Our children and tamariki need to grow up free of the risk of becoming addicted to tobacco and the effects of second-hand smoke.

Smokefree/Auahi Kore Workplace and Environment Policy

Our Smokefree/Auahi Kore Workplace and Environment Policy is designed to protect employees, patients and visitors from exposure to tobacco smoke generated by others and to encourage and support smokers to make a quit attempt.

Smoking and tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable illness and death in New Zealand, accounting for an estimated 5000 deaths every year.

Hospitalisation provides a good environment and opportunity to initiate and support a quit attempt, not only for patients but also the parents and other family members of hospitalised children and young people. Taranaki District Health Board (Taranaki DHB) is concerned about the health and wellbeing of all employees, patients and visitors.

The Midland DHBs have agreed to provide strong leadership to achieve the vision of a Smokefree Midland by 2025. The benefits of ridding our communities of tobacco are substantial.  Within Taranaki, TDHB has a key role to support people to stop smoking.

We believe that tobacco and smoking are still too visible in our communities.  Our children and tamariki need to grow up free of the risk of becoming addicted to tobacco and the effects of second-hand smoke.
